William Horton was given the name William Reed when he was born, as mom Samantha Brady claimed he was a result of one night with Austin Reed. For his first few years, Sami and Austin raised him, but eventually Sami’s secret was let out of the bag and Lucas Roberts (who later took the surname Horton) was revealed as Will’s dad.

Although he started as a quiet child, he eventually became a rowdy one. He would talk back to his parents and caused trouble at school. He wanted both his parents to be together, but two attempts at marriage were thwarted by Lucas learning of Sami’s wrongdoings. Will thought he would finally be happy when Lucas married his Aunt Carrie and Sami married his Uncle Austin, but he was devastated when Austin and Carrie began having an affair and ran away to Chicago. Tired and hungry, he soon returned home. He was thrilled when Lucas and Sami finally did marry and Sami revealed she was pregnant with twins. She soon had to confess E.J. raped her and might be the father. Stefano later forced Sami to choose E.J. with a promise that he’d stop his violent vendetta if she did. A devastated Will was sent to live with Carrie and Austin in Switzerland. He returned two years later and was aged to 16 years old. As a teen, Will became involved with a girl named Mia and then a girl named Gabi, who became his longtime high school sweetheart. When they took their relationship to the next level, Will was confused as to why he did not feel sexually attracted to Gabi.
He also began confiding in grandmother Marlena about his issues and this led to Will realizing he was gay and Marlena encouraged him to come out to his parents. Lucas was supportive and Sami was not, but she eventually came around. Of course, Will also had a one-night stand with Gabi during all this and she learned she was pregnant.
Eventually, Will tried to get a legal custody arrangement for his daughter, Ariana, but he also legally married Sonny with his whole family by his side.
